HEARING THERAPY

What is hearing loss?

Hearing is the ability to perceive sound. A person suffering from hearing loss has difficulty in perceiving or identifying sound clearly due to auditory problems. The impairment may be single ear or both ear. Hearing loss is one of the world’s most common health problems. It is also one of the most ignored problems
Signs of hearing loss
  • Listening the television and radio volume louder than other people.
  • Difficulty in understanding speech if you can’t see the speaker’s face.
  • Turning your head to one side to hear
  • Difficulty to identifying location of the sound
  • You speak too loudly or too softly.
  • You can’t understand what is being said when someone speaks to you from another room.
  • You avoid social situations or Group conversation.
  • Hearing but cannot understand the speech.
  • Asking people to repeat what they said or respond inappropriately to questions.
  • Difficulty understanding in restaurants, Temple, Theater and other noisy environments where several people are talking at the same time.
  • Difficulty understanding in a group or social situations.
  • You can’t understand your grandchildren or other young children.
  • You hear better in one ear on the telephone .
  • You have dizziness , pain , or ringing in your ears.
  • Missing phone calls or the doorbell.
  • you may notice that certain spoken sounds — like sh, th and f — are more difficult to hear than others.

TYPES OF HEARING LOSS

  • Conductive hearing loss - when hearing loss is due to problems with the ear canal, ear drum, or middle ear and its little bones (the malleus, incus, and stapes).
  • Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) -The most common type, sensorineural hearing loss is a problem with the inner ear or the hearing nerve, is usually permanent, and can be rehabilitated with amplification through HEARING AIDS.
  • Mixed Hearing Loss- Mixed hearing loss is a combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss.

    CAUSES OF HEARING LOSS

  • Aging
  • Repeated exposure to loud noises
  • Infections
  • Injuries to the head or ear
  • Birth defects or genetics
  • Ototoxic drugs

    DIAGNOSTIC HEARING TESTS

Audiologists evaluate hearing in clients from newborn to old age people. A series of separate tests are used that allow the audiologist to determine the type (where the problem is occurring), degree (severity) and configuration (pattern of hearing loss across frequencies).

How is Hearing Loss measured and described ?

    • Pure tone audiometry is a hearing test used to determine the presence or absence of hearing loss. Pure tones are used to test air and bone conduction. Tests are usually carried out at 250 to 8000Hertz (Hz, or cycles per second).
    • Pure tone audiometry indicates what hearing thresholds (dB) are required to able to perceive a tone at different frequencies(Hz). Threshold at a specific frequency is the decibel level at which a sound is perceived 50% of the time.
    • Result

    • An audiogram is a graphic representation of a hearing test
    • Each ear is tested separately and the threshold for each ear is marked on the audiogram using RED COLOUR for the RIGHT EAR and BLUE for the LEFT EAR. The decibel scale used in this test is (dB HL).

    TESTING TIME

  • This test takes 45 mins. The reports will be provided immediately after test.
  • IMPEDANCE AUDIOMETRY

  • It measures the mobility and air pressure of the middle ear and (stapedial) reflexes
  • REPORTS

  • It is produced in a form of TYMPANOGRAM.
  • TESTING TIME

  • Approx. 15 – 20mins for complete this test. Clinical reports will be provided immediately after test.
